Key concepts

What is the LGPD?
The General Data Protection Law (LGPD) is the Brazilian legislation that aims to protect the fundamental rights of freedom, privacy and the free development of the personality of natural persons. The LGPD regulates how organizations must process personal data, lawfully and securely, giving data subjects knowledge of and control over their personal information.
What is personal data?
Personal data is information relating to a natural person that can make that person identified or identifiable. Some examples of personal data are name, email, CPF (Brazilian taxpayer ID), IP address, date of birth, etc.
What is sensitive personal data?
Under the LGPD, sensitive personal data is data that may lead to some kind of discrimination and therefore requires a higher level of protection. Examples include racial or ethnic origin, religious belief, political opinion, membership of a trade union or of a religious, philosophical or political organization, data concerning health or sex life, and genetic or biometric data, when linked to a natural person.
